There are some amazing organizations advocating for disability rights and inclusion across Calgary and Alberta. Here are three of them!
Inclusion Alberta is a family-based nonprofit that encompasses over 40 organizations across Alberta. Their mission is to advocate for children and adults who have developmental disabilities. They help families navigate available resources for greater inclusion in schools, post-secondary, employment, recreation, and home life. Through Inclusion Alberta Youth, they also empower young people with and without disabilities to become agents of social change.
Upcoming events include a virtual fundraiser on October 22, as well as the Inclusion Alberta Youth Conference on November 14. This virtual conference, open to all youth, aims to educate attendees on global perspectives on inclusion and ways they can help create more inclusive communities for people with developmental disabilities.
For over 20 years, the Disability Action Hall has been advocating for the rights of people with disabilities. They are a Calgary-based organization comprised of self-advocates and allies, and they work towards social change through contacting government officials, obtaining media coverage, and holding rallies. Everyone is welcome to attend their weekly meetings, where members hold discussions on change-making initiatives, what it’s like to live with a disability, and current issues. Meetings are currently held through Zoom.
Voices of Albertans with Disabilities works with individuals, organizations, schools, and businesses to reduce the barriers to access faced by people with disabilities. They provide services such as accessibility assessments, inclusive physical design guidelines, and disability awareness. Voices of Albertans with Disabilities also pushes for social change through a network of Alberta-based advocacy organizations. Currently, they have an upcoming campaign that will share stories of those who work in the nonprofit sector, with the aim of encouraging more people to consider careers with nonprofits.
